How Long Do Outboard Engines Last?

The most common question we get from used-boat buyers: how many hours does this outboard have left? Here's the real answer.
Typical 4-stroke outboard lifespan
- Yamaha: 2,800 – 3,500 hours
- Suzuki: 2,500 – 3,200 hours
- Honda: 2,500 – 3,000 hours
- Mercury (modern Verado): 2,200 – 3,000 hours
- Pre-2010 2-stroke (any brand): 1,500 – 2,500 hours
These numbers assume proper maintenance and reasonable use patterns. They go up or down meaningfully based on the variables below.
What extends outboard life
- Annual service done on schedule, not late
- Flushing after every saltwater run
- Storing in dry rack rather than wet slip — see storage costs by region
- Running at varied RPM rather than constant WOT
- Using ethanol-free fuel where available
- Replacing impellers annually
What shortens outboard life
- Skipped or late service intervals
- Constant WOT operation (commercial-style use)
- Saltwater storage without proper flushing
- Ethanol-related fuel system issues
- Ignored ECU warning codes
Hours don't tell the whole story
Two outboards with the same hour count can have wildly different remaining life. We recommend buyers also check:
- Compression on every cylinder
- ECU stored fault history
- Maintenance records
- Storage history (saltwater wet slip vs dry rack)

What happens at end of life
Once an outboard hits its expected lifespan, the failure mode is usually one of three:

- Lower-unit failure
- Fuel system / ECU failure
A used boat extended warranty can absorb the financial impact of any of those failures even on higher-hour engines.
