How To Transfer a Mercury Warranty to a New Owner
Boat Protection Experts is an independent provider of marine protection plans. We are not affiliated with Mercury Marine, we are not an authorized Mercury dealer, and we do not process Mercury warranty transfers. This page is a plain-language guide to Mercury's own published rules. Transfers are filed directly with Mercury.
Verified September 2026 against Mercury's official transfer page, Mercury's 2022 Transfer Request Form, and the Mercury Product Protection Gold Plan Benefits & Provisions (8M0236692, rev 3-17-25).
Limited Warranty vs Mercury Product Protection
These are two different things and they transfer under two different sets of rules. Conflating them is the most common reason a transfer fails.
| Mercury Limited Warranty | Mercury Product Protection | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost to transfer | No charge. | A fee per engine — see the fee table below. |
| Deadline | Mercury does not publish a deadline. Do it promptly anyway. | Within thirty (30) business days after the subsequent purchase. Miss it and the contract is void. |
| Who it transfers to | A subsequent purchaser. | Subsequent recreational-use owners only. |
| What carries over | The remainder of the unused portion of the warranty only. | The remaining contract term. Coverage is not transferable from one product to another. |
| Commercial use | Not transferable for products used commercially. | Commercial, professional and revenue-generating use is excluded outright. |
| What is required | Completed Mercury transfer form plus a copy of the bill of sale or receipt showing the engine serial number and the sale date. | Transfer form, bill of sale or receipt, and the fee. |

How to transfer the Mercury Limited Warranty
This one is free. The new owner receives the remainder of the unused portion of the factory warranty. It is not transferable for products used commercially.
- Download the current transfer form from Mercury's official transfer page.
- Attach a copy of the bill of sale or receipt showing the engine serial number and the sale date.
- Submit it to Mercury Product Protection using the channels below.
- Mercury records the new owner on processing.
Mercury does not publish a deadline for the Limited Warranty transfer. We are not aware of one — do it promptly regardless.
How to transfer Mercury Product Protection
Mercury's Gold plan provisions state: "This Contract may be transferred to a subsequent purchaser of the Product within thirty (30) business days after the subsequent purchase of the Product." Miss the window and the contract is void — not suspended, and not reinstatable.
- Confirm the sale date and count your window. Mercury Product Protection must be transferred within thirty (30) business days after the subsequent purchase of the product. Start from the sale date on the bill of sale.
- Complete Mercury's transfer request form. Download the current transfer request form from Mercury's official transfer page. Boat Protection Experts does not host or reproduce Mercury's form.
- Attach the bill of sale or receipt. The paperwork must show the engine serial number(s) and the sale date, with both parties' names, addresses, phone numbers and signatures.
- Pay the transfer fee. Fees are charged per engine and vary by product. Payment options are credit card, electronic check (US only), billing to a dealer account, or calling Mercury Product Protection to pay.
- Submit to Mercury Product Protection. Mail to Mercury Product Protection, PO Box 1939, Fond du Lac, WI 54936-1939, email mpp.support@mercmarine.com, or fax 920-926-2639.

What your bill of sale must contain
Mercury rejects incomplete paperwork. After the deadline, incomplete paperwork is the most common reason a transfer fails. Your bill of sale needs:
- Engine serial number(s), make and model
- Full seller name, address and phone number
- Full buyer name, address and phone number
- The sale date
- Signatures from both parties
When a transfer will be refused
- "Engines not purchased directly from another recreational use owner or from an Authorized Mercury Dealer are ineligible for coverage."
- Mercury may also refuse transfers on repossessed items, auction purchases, salvage-yard products, and engines from unauthorized dealers.
- Commercial, professional or revenue-generating use — competitive driving, commercial fishing, tour guides, water-ski shows — is excluded outright.
- Coverage is not transferable from one product to another.
- There is an eight-year total limit on the standard limited warranty and contract period combined.
- The Mercury Product Protection transfer was filed after 30 business days.
"I missed the 30-day window" or "my coverage has expired"
The straight answer: a Mercury Product Protection contract that was not transferred inside the 30-business-day window is void, and it cannot be reinstated. Nobody can restore it — not us, and not a dealer.
Two things may still be true. The factory Limited Warranty may still transfer if time remains on it, and that transfer is free — file it with Mercury. And for the coverage you have lost, an independent marine protection plan is the remaining option.
